Laila Valentina

Eorzea’s very own Swiss Army knife. They tend to keep a low profile, something of a Tony Hawk figure, but when in the public eye they strive to present the perfect Warrior of Light kayfabe; confident, brave and extroverted. Despite this front, they do genuinely want to help people. In day to day life, Laila is more reserved and keeps their true thoughts and feelings to themself. At their worst, this can lead to resentment that manifests as standoffishness.

They have a great distaste for heroic last stands and unnecessary sacrifice, they’ll do whatever it takes to ensure the survival of their comrades and themself. Their favorite part of an adventure is coming home.

Background

Laila is the child of Ciro Malaguld and Ibelle Valentina. Ciro is an artisan and merchant of the Malaguld, one of the tribes of the Azim Steppe to count Raen among their members. She often traveled between the Steppe and Shirogane, taking young Laila with her. After the birth of Laila’s sister Mila, she secured passage for her family on a ship bound for Eorzea to escape Garlean rule. Once there, they settled into one of the small villages in Gridania’s Black Shroud.

Ibelle is a Duskwight living in the Black Shroud. In their youth they were a petty thief and general ne'er do well, but they eventually took on honest work as a sellsword through the adventurer’s guild. Ciro and Ibelle met when Ciro went to the adventurer’s guild looking for someone to escort her through the Black Shroud as she transported wares to Mor Dhona.

Coming from a family of artisans, Laila dabbled in many crafts from a young age but never truly took to any of them. However, they contributed to the family as a botanist, collecting materials for their mother and sister. Growing up, they picked up some basic conjuration from their mother and some archery skills from Ibelle, to varying degrees of success. As an adult, they made a living mainly through work with the Botanists’ Guild along with the occasional escort mission through the Adventurers’ Guild.

They were 22 by the time of the Calamity, under the boughs of the Black Shroud as Dalamud descended on Eorzea; the burning skies awakening them to the Echo.
